It was during Wilson’s childhood, on the plains of Iowa, that his longing to create music began to develop, evolving into the "dirty alternative folk-rock" style that he crafts today. Although his family had virtually no musical background, it was his older brother who introduced him to the guitar and it was on his grandfather’s old Sears Silvertone acoustic that Wilson remembers honing his early, inherent skills. Not satisfied just playing music, he longed for more, and songwriting and poetry were mediums that he could exploit in order to reveal what was on the inside. As a teenager, Wilson was largely impacted by thoughts of shortcomings and prevalent ironies in the culture in which he lived, and his early poems reflect that.
