Teddi King, Live at The Painted Pony

Teddi King, Live at The Painted Pony

What do we look for in a singer?

A sound (Sarah Vaughan, Barbra Streisand)? Control of the instrument (Roberta Gambarini, Ella Fitzgerald)? Taste in material (Carmen MacRae, Mel Torme)?
Once in a great while we strike greatness (Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland).
Basically, I think, we look to be moved. To joy, for example. Or to that intimate mix of nostalgia and loneliness that can put a lump of emotion in your throat.
Teddi King died too young, at 47.
But before she died, in a series of recordings with people like George Shearing and Dave McKenna, she combined her sound, her control, and her taste into a most compelling and provocative package...from the most joyful to the most rueful. In her songs, she becomes the character.
This live concert features a few little-known songs and some favorites...like Ghost of a Chance. Teddi here is at her most vibrant.
